Music is a hobby or career for many people. Regardless of one's skill level, there are always things one can do to improve their skill and talent. Here is a list of some of those methods in improving one's musicianship. Practice! This is the most obvious. However, don't fall into the trap where one thinks that practicing many hours will result in major improvement. What is more important is that you practice efficiently by honing in on troublesome techniques and passages. Additionally, make sure you have a strong fundamental background. While it may seem tempting to start learning slap bass when you first pick up a bass guitar, remember that those advanced techniques build upon simple basics ones. Without the basics, you will be extremely limited. Listen to lots of music to broaden your horizons. Obviously, you want to listen to a lot of what is going on in the genre of music you associate most with. While if you play a lot of rock guitar, it is good to listen to a lot of rock bands. However, don't box yourself into a particular genre either. Many famous rock musicians have been quoted as gaining inspiration from such diverse genres such as classical music, jazz, and even Brittney Spears! Take advice from other people. When people have something to advise you with, listen to it. If they say your electric guitar tone seems very shrill, you may want to change things up a bit. However, take everything with a grain of salt. There are those who may not know what they are talking about or have certain preconceived notions about music. Play with other people, especially those who are better than you. Just jamming along with them will help sharpen your skills. Be devoted to your craft. Music is an art that requires a lot of time, energy, passion, and even sacrifice. You cannot expect to become good without working hard for it (unless you are a natural genius, in which case practicing will make you even more amazing)
